March 10, 2011
Well the 2010 Quail season was one of ups and downs to say the least. The only way I know to sum it all up was that some days were really good and others, well, they were really bad. The more that I hunt wild, free-ranging quail the more that I find myself getting frustrated. This past season we had a lot of quail! Some days when the conditions were right, we could go out and move 8-12 coveys in a day. Then, a day later, we would get a strong north wind, and it was all we could do to find 3 or 4 coveys in a day. At times due to a lack of rain & moisture, the dogs just simply could not smell the birds. After 20 years of chasing some of the finest pointers in the country across the TX panhandle, I have come to except the fact that neither I nor my dogs can control the weather. One thing I do know is that did we ever leave a lot of birds for seed this year. Now, all we can do is pray for favorable nesting conditions for the upcoming breeding season and hope that we have another great hatch. Only time will tell the story for the upcoming year, but lets just say that is has a lot of potential!
See ya soon,
